The application window for our 2017-18 cohort is now open. Devon Teaching School Partnership has been appointed by the National College for Teaching and Leadership to deliver the NPQSL.

What is the NPQSL qualification?

The NPQSL programme is a national qualification that recognises the skills and abilities you have as a senior leader with wider responsibilities across a school or schools.

Who is the programme for?

It designed to develop the leadership potential of Senior Leaders with cross-school responsibilities. experienced middle leaders,. If you are, or are aspiring to become, a Senior leader with cross-school responsibilities e.g. those who are, or are aspiring to become, an experienced Senior leader, member of a senior leadership team, a subject or assessment coordinator line managing other staff within their own school or across a MAT, a deputy headteacher, an assistant headteacher, or other senior staff, then this is an exciting development opportunity for you.

We welcome applicants from across Devon and the South West.

What will I gain from it?

The NPQSL is an excellent opportunity to make a difference to an across or whole school team you are leading and extend their impact on children’s learning. Throughout the whole programme you will be supported to explore, address and progress in your own leadership style and qualities. You will gain a greater understanding, through research, through experiences and through coaching how to understand your leadership and how it can impact on the complex processes of school improvement work.

What is the Programme Structure?

The design of the programme is to support you in work that you are already doing within school so that you know that your time commitment is both worthwhile and more effectively used.

An outline of the four modules that comprise the programme are set out below. Each module will support you with:

  • Face to face training days exploring  key themes of your leadership
  • Personal 1:1 coaching to support your thinking about your project, your team and your leadership
  • Working within an Action Learning Set to compare and contrast different schools, including visits and hosting a visit.
  • Latest research materials and reading to extend and challenge your thinking
  • Planning templates and exemplars to support the development of your project especially a Team Development and Communications Plan, Project Development Business Case and a Risk Management Plan.

The programme will begin in the Autumn term and will last 3 terms followed by a period of time in which to submit your assignment in two windows in January and March 2019.

How will I be Assessed?

All NPQSL participants will complete an improvement project that they will lead with a team across the school to a) reduce variation in pupil progress and attainment b) improve the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching. You are able to decide with your leadership team the nature of this project. You will then submit for assessment a 5,000 word assignment which covers the initiation, implementation and evaluation of the project.

Who will be my Programme facilitators and coaches?

Andy Ogden has wide experience of school leadership to enable him to provide outstanding support for candidates on the Senior Leadership Programme. He is currently the Director of Devon Teaching School Partnership and the Programme Manager of Devon Primary SCITT. These roles combined with previously working as a Headteacher, Local Authority School Improvement Advisor and National Strategy Consultant bring an understanding of the complexities of school improvement processes and the leadership of teams across schools. He has been a facilitator on NPQ programmes for 5 years and is described as having ‘inspirational leadership that models and secures outstanding personalised training, professional development and pastoral support’.

David Barnett has been involved in primary education for 30 years in different Local Authorities across the South West. He has held a number of leadership roles and is currently on his second headship. He spent 2 years working for the DFE in a National Leadership role and has worked as a Primary National Strategies Consultant Leader. David has always enjoyed supporting the professional development of the next generation of school leaders and has mentored colleagues through the NQPML and NPQH. Recently he has been involved in facilitating training for the CofEPQH and Diocesan New Headteachers induction programmes. He is looking forward to working with colleagues on the NPQSL programme and to supporting individuals to meet the challenge of school leadership within an ever changing and developing educational landscape.

What is the cost of the NPQSL programme?

For 2017-18 the cost of the programme, (which includes the final assessment of your assignment) is £995 (£945 for partnership schools)

We have bursaries of £475 available to schools with 30% FSM or participants who are from a non-white British heritage. We also offer £150 discount for schools with less than 150 pupils on roll.
